Vintage-Inspired Millinery

New York-based milliner, Behida Dolic handcrafts gorgeous 1920’s and 1930’s-inspired hats and sells them out of her small shop in Hudson, north of New York City. A refugee of the Balkan War, Dolic moved to the United States in 1998 with the a create-with-what-you-have mentality born of her humble childhood in Bosnia, a virtue that continues to resonate in her work. A true artisan, Dolic is ever so dedicated to hand-sewing and hand-draping each and every one of her hats. She draws inspiration from old films, vintage fashion and art deco architecture.

Behida Dolic’s story and art are incredibly inspiring. Millinery is a craft that requires great skill, attention to detail and patience. Her approach to hat-making is simple and her unique and era-specific style is reminiscent of Coco Chanel, who began her career in fashion as a milliner.

365 Vintage Days

Fintage, a blog written by several Finnish vintage enthusiasts, has become a new favorite find for several reasons, but especially for “365 Vintage Days.” One of the contributors has been collecting vintage clothing and accessories from all over the world for the past twenty years. She has created a challenge for herself by attempting to don one ever so perfectly matched vintage ensemble every day for one year. Well, I must say she is doing a DAMN good job! Not only is she adorable, but her vintage clothing are all so well preserved, each look is incredibly stylish and form flattering and she manages to have the perfect shoes, jewelry and purse for every outfit she puts together. But what I’m gushing over the most is all her fabulous pairs of CAT GLASSES! Go on girl!

Vintage Find of the Day: 1950’s rainbow stripped dress from Father & Son Antiques (the best vintage store in the city).
Yesterday I had the pleasure of vintage shopping at my favorite place with one of my favorite people. This dress was hanging out waiting for me on an over-crammed rack of dresses and well…it was love at first sight. Its cute colorful stripes, puffy shoulders, and varied piping along the collar and sleeves create the perfect look for welcoming in the spring to North Carolina. The dress is big on me, but after consulting my favorite seamstress sidekick (my momma), I bought the dress and we are already elbows deep in needles, scissors, thread, and zippers altering it to perfection. Pictures of the final product to come…

Retrovival Revels in Tacky Bridesmaids Dresses
I may be a little biased in saying this, but being a female can be pretty freaking awesome. I mean, guys really miss out on a lot of the great pleasures in life we women get to enjoy: menstrual cycles, childbirth, boob sag and the bridesmaid dress. We’ve all been there…well, many of us have. If you haven’t yet had the pleasure my dears, fret not. Your time will come. Oh yes. You ain’t lived until you get escorted down the aisle in a pastel, pouffy, bunched, bedazzeled, belaced, t-length, tapered, butt bowed, sequined, layered, patterned, shiny, ruffled, stuffed, themed, taffeta, what the hell did I do to deserve this disaster. And despite the mix of horror and anger that you suppress with a forced smile or the overwhelming desire to get completely wasted at the reception, you wear the dress because you are a good friend or sister and you know that nothing makes a bride’s self confidence skyrocket like witnessing her girls look way ugly on her day.

“All of the raw materials come from within 200 miles of Raleigh, and the selvage denim is woven on the same shuttle looms responsible for the original Levi’s (the couple took over an abandoned factory once operated by the jeans giant)…Every pair of jeans that finds its way onto store shelves has been designed, sewn, washed, and finished under one roof by the duo.”

Vintage Find of the Day: Red clutch with handle
Looky looky what I got this evening at the vintage store Moda Amiga y Rastrel Reciclatge in Valencia. I collect vintage clothing and accessories, but I have a particular weakness for le vintage clutch. This little number only cost me 10€ and it just happens to be my most favorite color.
